As it's a bit quiet at the moment...

I was going to leave this for Sunday evening, but as it's gone a bit quiet I thought I'd have a bit of a play now! (There's other stuff in the pipeline for the 7th!)

This arrived the other day and didn't come from an auction site.

What is it?

Any ideas?
big d

Well its made by sel it could be an engine
Spokesmann

Things can be quieter in the summer. Is is an SEL dynamo, induction coil box?

Here's some more...

Ok - there's no fooling you Mike, good guess.

I know it's not a steam engine, but I was quite taken by it and it is SEL after all.

Nice bakelite bases . . .

Here it is in all it's wirey glory...

Some close-ups...

It's even got the little packet with a spare pair of brushes! I've tested it using a 4.5v dry cell by the way, but Ive got to find a suitable transformer to get the best from it. I want to see if it'll run my SEL workshop.
steamyjim

I love it! Has a charm that only old electronics has!

Probably has more power than an SEL engine! Laughing

It would be difficult to find a cleaner one, I bet its never been used  Very Happy

One of the best I've seen Stepehen, a real timecapsule. Have you tried it?
Scorpion2nz

Nice little motor
I have 1 here but nowhere as nice as that one  and no box  it goes with my SEL accessory's as have no SEL engine

Yes, with a 4.5v dry cell. It ran very well with only a little sparking at the brushes.

Somewhere, I've got an old (pre-war), low voltage DC transformer that my Dad used to power a light in the Crib at Christmas. It was designed for a door bell I think. Now if I can Just find it...

Sounds interesting, I love old electrical stuff like this!

That's super Stephen and in such great condition  Very Happy

As it has an electromagnet for the field magnet I assume it is like the Multum motor and always runs the same way no matter which way round you connect the supply.  A bit strange in these days of permanant magnet DC motors!

What a find, boxed & mint condition Very Happy
I have a rather tired looking example, which has a couple of bits of copper wire for brushes & is very temperamental when running.

D'you know, I was a bit concerned about posting this as I thought I might have been inundated with cries of, "That ain't steam", etc. I'm really pleased that you all appreciate it. It is rather special I think.

I'm sure it reversed when I swapped the supply round, but I could be wrong. I'll check again and see.
