Anyone interested in this

Chas is selling these Bowman catalogues (reprints)
For £9.50 on ebay
If we could get one each for £1 would anyone be interested ?

This is how it works, someone on this forum buys one for £9.50
He then makes a high resolution scan of the catalogue
And emails the scans to the 9 members of the forum who want one

We then print out our own Bowman catalogue
And we pay £1 via paypal to the person who emails the scans

Paypal cuts out postage, and we print our own catalogue
This way keeping the costs down to £1
So anyone want one ?

I think it is ethically a bit dubious. I have no qualms about copying an old original catalogue or even "borrowing" a few illustrations from a modern reprint but actually ripping off a complete commercial product is sailing a bit close to the wind for me.

Considering Chas was selling them for 2.99, before a real copy went for over £40(?) a few weeks ago, he's obviously upped his prices! Shocked

Aye they are out of reach of the normal collector now at £40
I would like one but I would not pay that much money for one
And Chas's are over priced at £9.50
I think the £1 option is the best
Very Happy

Quite agree Fred, ethically (and legally) naughty.

It may be wrong to buy a copy of a copy & freely distribute it among members, but does Chas have the right to make numerous copies & sell openly via the internet/toy fairs. Can i buy a copy of an old book/catalogue, photocopy then resell ?, legally no. Chas does however offer us a glimpse of bowman history, that we might not otherwise see as copies are pretty rare. In some respects good on him for thinking of it first. As a business he's only reacting to market demand by upping the price however cheeky it may seem. Recent copies on ebay have gone for around £50 &certainly prompted this increase.

It depends, but perhaps the answer is yes depending on how old 'old' is . Wink
Copyright protection generally only lists for 50 years (in the UK) after the death of the author. If the work is of unknown authorship, copyright expires at the end of the period of 50 years from which it is first made available to the public. Without investigating further, I don't know if the original publication that Chas is selling as a copy is now considered to be in the public domain.

If it is not yet in the public domain, perhaps Chas (or whoever is actually copying them) has a licence to do so from the copyright owner.

What is clear is that based on some of Chas' other copies, the copy may include some original work (i.e it's not a straight copy of the original item), and hence he is able to copyright it himself - and so copying his copy is not legally allowed without his permission.
