£100M Mega Mosque bigger than Westminster Abbey,WembleyI recieved this email a while ago and have just found it while clearing my email folder out
Its asking me to sign a petition against the proposed Mega Mosque in London. Email below
Ken Livingstone is apparently planning to use tax payer's money to build an
enormous mosque costing an estimated £100M in the docklands.
Wouldn't it be better to spend the money on a new hospital or improved
transport facilities. anything but such a scheme as this:
The mosque will be BIGGER THAN ST PAUL'S!!!
The plan is for the mosque to be so big so that people flying in from all
over the world for the 2012 Olympics will see it as the biggest landmark in
London , bigger than St Pauls, Westminster Abbey or Wembley Stadium.
The vote so far is 56% in favour. It looks like the Muslim community in the
UK is casting its vote in droves, and as usual the British are burying their
heads in the sand....
It is an undemocratic use of British Tax payers money, especially when our
Churches that are 100's of years old get no government funding to keep their
structures standing, and we are supposedly a Christian nation.
To vote to "Scrap the 'Mega-Mosque" please sign the official Government
petition in the link below.

Deadline to sign up by: 18 July 2007 - Signatures: 83,128 (as at 03/07/07)[/i]
This is the link for the petition, so I think its genuine

The plans appear genuine, however some of the 'facts' are either missing or just plain wrong.
It seems the land that is planned to be used already is owned by the Muslim community and there is a delapitated mosque already on the site, used by many muslims. The plans are to knock it down and regenerate the area. The new complex will include a garden, school, library and accommodation for visiting worshippers as well as a mosque. However, no planning application has even been submitted yet.
British Taxpayers money (some of whom are Muslims!) is not being used to fund this venture (if approved) - it's being funded by a muslim charity who would seek private donations from within the UK & abroad if it goes ahead. I'm not sure I nor anyone else has the right to suggest that the muslim charity who plan on raising this money should then be made to hand it over to fund the British NHS (or perhaps to buy some more bendy busses for London! ) However, it seems over a quarter of a million people don't agree with me! (if all the names on the petition are to be believed as genuine)
What this has to do with Ken Livingstone, I really don't know. The Mayor of London has absolutely no power to even approve any planning application; that's the responsibility of the local planning authority. (The Mayor can only direct that a planning application is refused and only then if it is a strategic one).

This topic has the potential to stir up a lot of emotions.
I would say that I have friends who are from all demonitions inc muslim, the press coverage of this story could well cause all sorts of trouble.
Im staying out of this debate, suffice to say though, lets keep it civilised.

Quite right Mike
As the government said in their official response:
| Quote: | "It is quite clear that the circulation of untrue information of this kind can damage good community relations.
"All religious faiths have the equal right to construct places of worship, subject to the appropriate planning permissions. The particularly vicious nature of the campaign against a possible Muslim place of worship in East London should be condemned by all of those who support the long established right of freedom of religion in this country, and all the more so as it is based on information which has long been established to be factually untrue." |
Btw SB, Ken Livingstone had nothing to do with the Olympic logo either. Here are some of his personal comments on that:
| Quote: | Referring to the 2012 logo, which has come in for heavy criticism, Livingstone says he has "come to tolerate it" despite having initial reservations.
"I'm the mayor of a city and the only thing any mayor wants in the logo is the name of the city enormous and predominant," he said.
"I didn't get that so I was a bit grumpy about that.
"It was hidden from me up until about the last two weeks and it was too late to do anything about it.
"I exploded pretty much as dramatically as the rest of the country when they saw it.
"But it's the only thing that I haven't got my way on in the last two years so I can't complain." |

and referring to the video...
| Quote: | | The promotional video was a "catastrophic mistake", according to London Mayor Ken Livingstone. |

I may not be a great fan of what Ken does sometimes, but let's keep any criticism of him to the things he's actually got responsibility for, eh?
